Claude Sets Real Elliptic Curve Record, Beating Years-Long Mathematician Hunt

Anthropic said an internal variant of its Claude model helped mathematician Levent Alpoge and a cryptographer produce elliptic curves with ranks of at least 30 and 31, surpassing the previous record of 29 that had stood for years.

The search for high-rank elliptic curves is a slow, computationally steep pursuit that typically takes mathematicians years of trial and refinement. Anthropic says Claude helped close that gap to days, according to Scientific American.

Elliptic curves underpin much of modern cryptography, including the elliptic curve cryptography used to secure Bitcoin and Ethereum transactions, so refining understanding of their structure carries stakes beyond pure math.

What The Record Actually Measures

Rank, in this context, describes how many independent points of infinite order sit on a curve, a number tied to unsolved territory in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. The newly reported rank of 31 is confirmed under that conjecture, while the previous record of 29 had held for an extended stretch of academic effort, according to ForkLog.

Why Anthropic Is Framing This As A Capability Result

Anthropic is positioning the work less as a math press release and more as evidence that Claude can operate as a genuine research collaborator on open problems, not just a coding or writing assistant. The company frames the elliptic curve result alongside other internal Claude deployments, including a recently unified Claude and Cowork product line aimed at agentic research tasks.

The claim has drawn scrutiny from mathematicians who note that AI-assisted search still relies heavily on human-guided heuristics and verification, meaning Claude accelerated an existing search strategy rather than inventing a new one. Anthropic has not disclosed full technical details of the internal model variant used, leaving independent replication as the next test of the record.
