Claude Opus 5 Vs Fable 5: Anthropic’s New Model Delivers Near-Flagship Performance At Half The Price

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on Friday, pitching it directly against its own higher-tier Fable 5 model and setting off a wave of benchmark comparisons that show the newer, cheaper model closing the capability gap faster than rivals expected.

The timing is deliberate. Businesses have been vocal about AI cost pressures, and Anthropic is offering Opus 5 at roughly half the price of Fable 5 while advertising performance that multiple outlets describe as “near” or “close to” Fable 5’s level, according to CNBC.

One notable feature arriving with the launch lets users toggle between cost and capability modes, giving enterprise teams a direct dial between spending less and squeezing out more performance depending on the task at hand.

Where Fable 5 Still Has The Edge

Fable 5, which belongs to Anthropic’s Mythos class of models sitting above the Opus tier, earned a score of 65 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index before today’s launch, ahead of OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 at 60 and Google’s Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview at 57. Opus 5 has not yet received a published score on that same index, but early head-to-head testing places it close enough that the price difference becomes the deciding variable for most buyers.

There is also a tokenization wrinkle worth noting. Fable 5 uses a new tokenizer that encodes the same content into roughly 30 percent more tokens than Opus-tier models, meaning its per-token billing can erode the apparent price advantage when prompts run long.

Opus 5 does not carry that overhead, which makes the cost comparison more favorable in practice than the headline price gap alone suggests.

What This Means For Coding And Enterprise Buyers

Anthropic is targeting Opus 5 specifically at coding workflows, autonomous agents, and enterprise pipelines, according to VentureBeat.

Those are exactly the use cases where inference costs compound quickly at scale, so a model that delivers Fable-class results without Fable-class bills is a meaningful offer for engineering teams running high-volume tasks.

The toggle feature reinforces that framing. Rather than forcing buyers to commit to a single performance tier, Anthropic is letting teams dial down when the task is routine and dial up when accuracy is critical, which reduces the pressure to pay for peak performance around the clock.

With Opus 5 benchmarking close to Fable 5 at half the price, Anthropic is essentially compressing its own model hierarchy in a way that could accelerate adoption among mid-market buyers who found Fable 5’s cost hard to justify.

Whether that accelerates revenue or simply trades margin for market share is the open question heading into the rest of 2026.
