Hunter Biden’s Risky $LAPTOP Memecoin Launch Draws Backlash Before Debut
Hunter Biden will launch a $LAPTOP memecoin on the Coinbase-built Base network on Sept. 9, 2026, with a one billion token supply reserving 20% for investors who lost money on Donald Trump‘s TRUMP token.
The founders, including him, will hold 30% of the total supply, locked for six months, per the Wall Street Journal. Backlash arrived before the token even traded, CoinDesk reported that Kraken deleted a promotional post after criticism, while a media outlet named in the token’s distribution plan publicly distanced itself from the project.
Distribution Plan Under Fire
Critics zeroed in on the mechanics rather than the politics. Tying 20% of supply to people who already lost money on a rival’s TRUMP token reads to skeptics as a play on resentment rather than utility, and traders online called the structure exploitative before a single wallet had received tokens.
Andrew Callaghan of Channel 5 told Complex that his outlet has “nothing” to do with the coin, adding that Channel 5 has repeatedly told followers it does not consider crypto a legitimate investment. That denial followed reports the media group was listed in the token’s distribution materials.
Hunter Biden’s Feud Priced Into A Token
The launch turns a five-year-old political scandal into tradable supply, betting that notoriety converts into liquidity the same way Trump’s own memecoin did. Copycat tokens referencing $LAPTOP have already appeared ahead of the Sept. 9 date, according to CCN, a pattern typical of high-attention memecoin debuts before verified contracts exist.
Whether the $LAPTOP token trades on reputation or collapses on distrust will be visible within hours, since Base-based memecoins typically reveal holder concentration and dump risk almost immediately on-chain.
