Fake News AI Fears Are Real, Pope Leo Issues Warning, Urges Rules
Pope Leo XIV said Monday that AI fears are not “Fake News” and urged regulation, challenging President Trump’s attributed dismissal of AI safety concerns.
Pope Leo made the remarks as part of a broader push for AI oversight that includes his apostolic exhortation, a formal papal teaching document, titled “Magnifica humanitas,” The Hill reported.
He said risks tied to advanced AI systems deserve serious study rather than being dismissed as hype, according to Global Banking and Finance.

The intervention puts the Vatican at odds with parts of the Trump administration and tech executives who have downplayed existential AI risk narratives advanced by researchers and safety advocates.
Some officials and executives have framed doomsday warnings as distractions from competition with China, while Pope Leo called on developers to prioritize the common good over commercial or geopolitical pressure.
A Named Principal Enters The Fake News Policy Fight
Pope Leo’s remarks matter because he is a named global principal entering AI governance with moral authority behind binding rules rather than voluntary industry pledges. The comments came amid broader Vatican engagement with AI firms including Anthropic, indicating the pope’s office is following the technical debate rather than commenting from a distance.
Regulation Over Self-Policing
Leo’s stated rule is “robust regulation.” That is a direct rejection of developer self-policing and places him closer to AI safety researchers than accelerationist voices in Washington and Silicon Valley.
For Anthropic and other developers, however, the operational details remain unspecified, Pope Leo named no compliance deadline, and the Vatican identified no enforcement action.
Whether the Vatican’s position shifts legislative outcomes remains unclear, but its rejection of the “Fake News” framing adds an unusual political voice to a fight largely between regulators, executives and researchers.
