Samsung Powers Mistral Valuation Toward $24 Billion

Samsung Electronics led the round, joined by the EU-backed Scaleup Europe initiative, Mistral said in a statement Tuesday. The figure values the company above €21 billion, roughly $24 billion at Tuesday’s exchange rate.

Mistral builds large language models and publishes their underlying parameters as open weights, letting any organization download, run and modify them instead of accessing a model only through a paid API.

The company’s X account called the raise “the largest equity round ever raised by a European tech company, just three years after launch,” adding that the funding gives customers “a real choice over how and where they run AI, not just access to a model.”

Mistral launched in 2023, founded by former Meta and DeepMind researchers who bet that publishing model weights openly would win enterprise trust that closed platforms could not match.

Tuesday’s round marks the third time investors have priced the Mistral valuation upward in under three years, as governments and companies sought AI infrastructure not tied to American or Chinese providers.

Why Sovereign AI Is Becoming A Balance Sheet Priority

The capital gives Mistral fresh runway against OpenAI, Google and well-funded Chinese labs. Mistral’s own announcement said funds will expand compute and product development across its open weight lineup.

Whether the $24 billion Mistral valuation holds depends on whether Samsung’s stake signals durable corporate appetite for open weight licensing, revenue the company has yet to prove at scale.
