Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP Memecoin Loses 99% Within an Hour of Launch

The LAPTOP memecoin launched by Hunter Biden peaked at $190.81 two minutes after its Sept. 9 debut on Base and was trading near $2.16 inside the hour, a fall of about 99%.

Key Takeaways

  • LAPTOP opened on Base, the layer 2 network built by Coinbase, with a fixed supply of 1 billion tokens.
  • A $1,000 buy at the peak print is worth close to $11 now, though that figure describes the single worst entry of the day rather than the average one.
  • One tracked wallet spent $200,040 near the top and held roughly $3,000 an hour later.
  • Founders including Biden hold 30% of supply, locked for six months and vesting over more than two years.

How A $1,000 Buy Became $10

At $190.81, a $1,000 order bought about 5.2 tokens. At $2.16 those tokens are worth roughly $11. The number circulating online is close to correct, but it measures the highest print of the session and nothing else.

A buyer who arrived ten minutes later at $20 is down around 89% instead of 99%, on the same token, on the same day.

That gap is the whole story. The loss figure is a function of when the order landed, not of anything the project did after launch.

Why The First Minutes Set The Price

LAPTOP did not open on an exchange order book. It opened in an automated market maker pool, where price is set by the ratio of assets held in the pool rather than by matched buyers and sellers. Early purchases drain the token side and push the quoted price up steeply.

Once buying slows, the same curve runs in reverse with nothing underneath it.

This is why one wallet paid about $217.60 a token, above the highest recorded market price. It withdrew close to $250,000 from an exchange before the debut, spent $200,040, and was left holding roughly $3,000.

Automated bots compete for the opening blocks, and every buyer behind them absorbs the slippage.

What The Token Actually Promises

Supply is fixed at 1 billion, with about 350 million unlocked at launch. Another 20% is set aside for airdrops in two rounds, aimed at wallets that lost money on TRUMP, at Biden’s Substack subscribers and at a mailing list run by video journalist Andrew Callaghan, whose company said publicly that it had nothing to do with the token. A further 30% is earmarked for burning if a list of specified political and market outcomes resolves, including a Democratic win in 2028.

Biden said on X that “you should not expect me or anyone else to make this token more valuable for you,” and called TRUMP a grift.

The Record For Political Tokens

TRUMP peaked near $73 in January 2025 and now trades near $2.25, down roughly 97%, with close to 989,000 wallets holding combined losses of about $3.8B. MELANIA is down around 99%.

The NYC token announced by former New York mayor Eric Adams fell 81% within minutes of its debut after a wallet linked to the deployer pulled $2.5M of liquidity.

LAPTOP has now repeated that pattern faster than any of them.
