Voice Agents Go Enterprise, OpenAI Presence Wants Your Support Desk and Your Staff

OpenAI launched OpenAI Presence on July 31 — a dedicated enterprise platform for deploying AI-powered voice and chat agents at organizational scale.

The product targets both customer-facing support and internal use cases, putting OpenAI in direct competition with specialized contact-center AI vendors.

The announcement calls Presence a “proven” platform, pointing to live deployments it says are already generating measurable results.

OpenAI Presence Enters A Market Worth Hundreds Of Billions

OpenAI Presence is a managed platform, meaning enterprises do not need to build agent infrastructure from scratch. The product handles voice synthesis, conversation flow, multilingual support, and integration with existing enterprise systems.

Companies deploy branded agents for call centers, help desks, or internal IT support without maintaining underlying model infrastructure themselves. The announcement confirms Presence is designed to serve both customer-facing and internal enterprise use cases at organizational scale.

The platform is built on GPT-Realtime, OpenAI’s low-latency audio model designed for real-time conversational applications.

GPT-Realtime processes speech input and generates spoken responses fast enough to sustain natural dialog, a requirement that text-based models do not meet. Latency below 400 milliseconds is generally cited as the threshold for conversational fluency, and the Realtime API was engineered specifically to clear that bar.

One referenced deployment involved Japanese retail chain Yamada Denki, where the robotics company avatarin used GPT-Realtime to run an in-store voice agent.

In two weeks, 30,000 shoppers interacted with the agent and 92% of survey responses were positive. That data point appears to be part of the commercial case OpenAI is building for Presence at launch.

The Enterprise Voice Agent Race OpenAI Presence Is Entering

The enterprise contact-center software market has been dominated for years by vendors including Genesys, NICE, and Five9, with newer AI-native entrants like Parloa, PolyAI, and Retell AI increasingly winning large deals.

All of them face the same fundamental challenge: voice AI capable of handling unscripted customer conversations at enterprise reliability standards is hard to build and expensive to maintain.

The arrival of OpenAI Presence changes the competitive dynamics in one specific way. By bundling frontier model capability directly into a managed platform, OpenAI removes the primary technical barrier that previously forced enterprises to assemble custom stacks.

A company can now go from decision to deployment without selecting a separate speech-to-text provider, language model, and voice synthesis engine.

The pricing model for OpenAI Presence was not detailed in the launch announcement. That gap matters because enterprise AI agent platforms typically charge per minute of conversation, per resolution, or on a seat-license basis, and the cost structure determines whether Presence competes primarily with contact-center software vendors or with hyperscaler AI offerings from Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

From Research Lab To Platform Company

OpenAI Presence is the clearest signal yet that OpenAI is repositioning from a model provider into a full-stack enterprise software company.

The company has moved through several distinct commercial phases since its founding. Early revenue came almost entirely from the ChatGPT consumer subscription and the API used by third-party developers to build their own products.

The shift toward named enterprise products accelerated this year.

OpenAI has separately cut GPT-5.6 prices for its Luna and Terra tiers, making API-based deployments more competitive, while simultaneously launching managed products like Presence that bypass the API entirely for customers who prefer not to build.

That dual strategy creates an internal tension. Customers who would have built on the OpenAI API may now buy Presence instead, cannibalizing API revenue in exchange for higher per-customer contract values.

Whether that trade-off favors OpenAI depends on how quickly large enterprises adopt managed AI platforms versus continuing to build in-house.

What Comes Next For OpenAI Presence

The immediate test for OpenAI Presence is enterprise procurement cycles, which typically run three to twelve months for software at this price tier. The 92% satisfaction figure from the avatarin case is useful marketing, but enterprise buyers will want security certifications, service-level agreements, and integration documentation before committing.

The competitive response from Microsoft, which distributes OpenAI models through Azure and has its own Copilot for customer service product line, will be worth watching.

Microsoft holds the enterprise relationships that OpenAI is trying to reach through Presence, and the two companies’ interests may not fully align as OpenAI sells more directly to large organizations.
